When the Air Fryer Turned Itself On
Fear, Cleansing, & Spiritual Boundaries in Real Life
There are certain moments that instantly change the atmosphere of a house.
Not because anything dangerous has actually happened yet… but because something suddenly feels wrong.
Tonight I was doing what I normally do: sitting in my living room watching a ghost hunting show. Nothing unusual. Honestly, paranormal shows have become background noise in my house at this point.
Then I heard a soft chime.
Twice.
At first, I ignored it. I assumed it came from the TV. Ghost hunting shows are full of strange sounds, dramatic music, whispers, static, and edited tension designed to make you stare suspiciously into dark corners of your own home.
Then I heard something else.
A low blower sound coming from my kitchen.
I got up to investigate and realized my air fryer oven had somehow turned itself on.
Now, listen.
This was not a simple “oops, I bumped the button” situation. My air fryer requires multiple buttons to be pressed before it starts running. It doesn’t casually wake itself from the dead and begin preheating without commitment.
So naturally, my soul left my body for approximately three business seconds.
My immediate response was:
“Nope.”
Not “interesting.”
Not “let’s investigate.”
Not “perhaps this is electrical.”
Just:
“Nope.”
And honestly? Sometimes that is the correct spiritual response.
So I grabbed my sage and smoke cleansed the house.
As I moved through the rooms, I said:
“If you aren’t one of ours then get the hell out.”
Not elegant.
Not poetic.
Not written in Latin.
But deeply sincere.
And that’s something I think modern witchcraft spaces forget sometimes.
Not every spiritual practice needs to look aesthetic or ceremonial to be meaningful.
Sometimes protection magic looks like:
- locking your doors
- unplugging the appliance
- reclaiming your space
- calming your nervous system
- reminding yourself that this house belongs to you
Because here’s the truth:
I do not actually know why the air fryer turned on.
There are perfectly reasonable explanations:
- power fluctuations
- touch panel glitches
- faulty electronics
- moisture or grease affecting controls
And I think practical explanations matter.
I’m not interested in turning every strange noise into a haunting or every coincidence into a sign from beyond. Living in constant fear of invisible forces is not spiritual awareness. It’s anxiety wearing a dramatic cloak.
But I also believe humans have always cleansed spaces for a reason.
Smoke cleansing, prayer, protective charms, blessing doorways, hanging herbs, speaking boundaries aloud… these practices exist across countless cultures because they help us reclaim a sense of safety and agency.
Sometimes the ritual itself is the medicine.
Sometimes the act of standing in your kitchen with smoke curling through the air and firmly declaring:
“You are not welcome here.”
is less about ghosts and more about reminding yourself that fear does not own this space.
And honestly?
After I cleansed the house, everything felt lighter.
Maybe spiritually. Maybe emotionally. Maybe psychologically.
I don’t necessarily think those things are separate.
What I do know is this:
The air fryer is now unplugged.
Because haunted or not, I’m not letting a countertop appliance become the opening scene of a documentary narrated in a whisper.
And if anything else in this house starts making unexplained noises?
The sage is ready.
